Riparian Restoration:
Tagabe River Project

Tagabe River riparian restoration project, Efate, Vanuatu.  As part of the Pacific Ecosystem-based Adaptation to Climate Change project, team members from Ecosystem Services, worked with the Vanuatu Department of Forestry and communities within the Tagabe River catchment to develop and implement a plan to restore vegetation along the banks and at the mouth of the Tagabe River. The communities along the lower reaches of the river had become susceptible to extreme climatic events, such as cyclones and heavy rainfall events which flooded the villages and reduced the community’s resilience. Through the re-establishment of riparian vegetation along the river and mangroves at the mouth of the river, these impacts could be reduced, together with a variety of livelihood activities, the community resilience to these flood events could be enhanced.
